Preventive Care for Dry Skin Patches

Preventive Care for Dry Skin Patches

Dry patches on the skin are one of the many skin conditions that affect a number of people. They are characterized by wrinkly looking patches on body parts; usually the elbows and knees. The knees, elbows and feet are parts of the body that face a lot of abuse. When not properly taken care of, the skin over the area thickens and becomes cracked, scaly and wrinkly looking. This dry skin condition can be quite embarrassing as it restricts clothing options; especially during summer months when these parts of the body are usually exposed. Dry skin patches are usually preventable and there are a few suggestions below to help you with any patches of dry skin that you may be experiencing.

Usually the skin of the elbows and knees would look more dry and wrinkled than other body parts as it is bent and stretched repeatedly. The feet have the work of bearing the weight of the body all day and the elbows usually get leaned upon. All this only stretches and hardens the skin patches in these areas. To counteract all this exposure, these parts of the body need extra attention. When this is lacking, dry skin patches are the result.

For preventive care against dry skin patches, you may try sliding bands cut out of old socks on elbows and knees. The socks are slathered with Vaseline or body cream and help achieve supple moisture in the skin. Some people find it useful to wear these to bed. The skin could just be lathered with cream and a sock pair worn over it, it might be funny to look at but it works just like a charm.

Using exfoliating scrub while in the shower or even a daily scrub at the sink will help keep the skin soft. A loofah or pumice stone can serve as an effective daily scrub for those dry patches of skin. It is also a useful habit to apply cream to your dry patches every night. When dry skin patches become quite serious but remain unresponsive to treatment, a doctor’s consultation should be sought.
